I met Julie around a decade ago, when I roped her into agreeing to work with me on a chaotic radio musical about musicals [which Julie has since found in a deep dark edge of the internet].
Since then, we’ve been orbiting in adjacent audio circles, so its a real joy to have Julie on the show this week. Alongside her day job, making podcasts at Canadaland, Julie Shapiro co-founded a new home for independent audio, new voices, and big ideas in podcasting, with fellow audiophile, John DeLore, called Audio Flux.
Audio Flux is a space for all, first-timers, longtime producers and audio fans alike -who believe deeply in audio culture and community, and the transformative power of sound + story. And who loooove to listen.
I sit down with Julie to talk about the stories that really pushed her as a storymaker, where she finds creativity beyond the day job, and why she spends her finite time on this planet, listening to tape.
How Audio Flux Works: Audio Flux regularly invites people far and wide to create short audio works in response to a set of prompts. For each “circuit” they engage with a creative partner who inspires these prompts, and share the resulting “fluxworks” via live events, online, across social channels, and on (soon) The Audio Flux Podcast, (fall, 2024.).
Circuit 04: Firsts is now accepting submissions through until 15 September. Their creative partner for 04 is acclaimed DC-based writer and literary artist, Jason Reynolds. Circuit 04 fluxworks (4 commissioned and 4 “Circuit Selects” chosen from submissions) will debut at the RESONATE Podcast Festival in October. Further information here.
